Two separate accidents on U.S. 35 westbound this morning sent several people to the hospital and caused a traffic headache for drivers.
The victims were transported to Miami Valley Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. One person had to be pulled from a vehicle after being trapped inside.
A total of four vehicles were involved in the two wrecks. The first accident happened around 7 a.m., while it was still dark. Two cars collided while changing lanes in the first collision, said Sgt. Mark Ponichtera.
“Shortly thereafter, within moments two more cars came along and collided with one of the other cars that was involved in the first accident,” Ponichtera added.
The highway was closed for about an hour-and-a-half while crews worked to clean up the scene. Normal traffic flow resumed around 8:30 a.m.

Police officers will increase their presence both in and outside of Bellbrook High School next week after a threatening message was discovered etched on the mortar between bricks in a boys bathroom Friday.
School administrators were notified a “violent threat” was written on the bathroom wall near the end of the school day, according to Sgt. Mark White of the Sugarcreek Twp. Police Department. The message, written in pencil, gave a time of 1 p.m. Monday that the threat would be carried out.
Administrators promptly notified the police department. The investigation is ongoing.
An email was sent to students, staff and parents on behalf of the district to confirm the threat and notify all parties that police would be increasing patrols throughout the schools next week.
Bellbrook High School had already been assigned a school resource officer, who has been in the building for “the last several years,” White said.
Friday’s message reportedly did not single out any one student but was directed toward the student body.
White said at this point authorities have “no idea” who might have authored the threat. Police plan to review surveillance footage and talk to students in the coming days.
“I can tell you this police department is going to do anything within its power to find this person responsible and prosecute these people or person to the furthest extent of the law,” White said.
An inducing panic charge likely awaits, White said. Since the incident took place on school grounds, he said that may escalate the severity of the offense.
He also said other charges, depending on the results of the investigation, are possible.
When asked if parents should consider keeping their students at home on Monday, White said that’s a private matter.
“I would let that rest with the parents themselves,” he said. “I think that’s a decision that has to be made within the family.”
White, however, has a child who attends Bellbrook High School. His student is planning to attend class on Monday.

Most of the Miami Valley had to endure negative wind chills Saturday morning as an extreme spell of wintry weather swept through the area.
Snowfall was limited to just an inch or two in most spots, but temperatures below ten degrees and subzero wind chills lingered throughout the morning. Accumulation is possible throughout the rest of the day, but falling temperatures are the biggest problem.
"Accumulations will be very little if any," Storm Center 7 Meteorologist Erica Collura said. "Wind chills will fall through the single-digits and back below zero tonight."
Temperatures should climb back to the high 20s during Sunday, Collura said.

Three major fires in Greenville in four years, it's about time to re-establish a "fire starter" program aimed at children that have a possible problem with playing with fire, said Greenville Police Detective Eric Roberts.
His comments came during the discussion of the latest fire, October 30, 2011 at Miami Valley Vending Service on Martin Street in Greenville.
A 9-year-old boy was charged with aggravated arson, but recently a juvenile judge in Darke County found the lad not competent to stand trial.
Other fires date back to September 2007 on Montgomery Street in a multiple death residential fire. A 9-year-old also charged with setting that blaze.
Then on July 16, 2010 two teens were charged with starting a fire in downtown Greenville. They were bored on a Friday night. Prior to setting what ended up as a huge fire, the pair had started a number of dumpster fires in the downtown area.
Both 18-year-olds are in prison.

A three-vehicle accident Friday evening on Ohio 49 left two people injured, the Darke County Sheriff’s Office said.
A preliminary investigation indicates that Graeme Mitchell, 50, of Arcanum, was waiting to make a left turn from northbound 49 to westbound Grubbs Rex Road when he was struck from behind by another vehicle at about 5:35 p.m.
The impact pushed his 2006 Ford Mustang into the path of a southbound vehicle.
There were two people in the southbound vehicle, Garry and Diane Crowe of Greenville. Brandon Vanata, 19 of Greenville, was driving the Ford Focus that struck Mitchell's vehicle.
Two people were taken to Wayne Healthcare in Greenville suffering from minor injuries, but deputies did not indicate which individuals were injured.
Deputies did not consider snow to be a factor in the crash, which is still under investigation.
